Diary 2007

28. Februar 2007 - Home sweet home

The two greek dogs with Nadja, my representation while i was abroad.
Thats Missy from Athens. She really is an unique mix, isnt she :)

Missy needs some more antibiotics because of an infected stich from the sterilisation.

Flokatis case is much more difficult. We found out that his main problem is an resolved fracture between lumbar vertebra 1 and 2. This injury was probably caused to an hard hit on his back

Probably to this disability he has developed an ulna luxation outwards of his right hind leg.

Fortunately he is in good condition, is handling his disability very good and has absolutely no pain.

27. Februar 2007 - Ferry Chania - Piräus + flight home

Flokati and me are going on board.

26. Februar 2007 - Malaxa - Vantes - Strasse des Elends

We ordered the medicament Neoral for Lafayette in the pharmacy.

George from the Medusa Tattoo Studio (www.medusatattoo.gr) close to  Lafayettes strees is immediately willing to administer the medicine daily for 30 days and keeping me up to date.

Get well soon and a big thank goes out to George !!!
Last day and still a mission. Malaxa and Vantes.

In this region are many dogs tied and set out. Its alway an uneasy feeling when we drive up here.
First stop at Tinas place. We freed her in 2005. Satisfied to see that there is no new dog tied.
But the first 'barrel-dog' is already in sight.

These 2 dogs have been here two years ago already.
Someone has chained a puppy at the bigger dog... with a wire.

These two dogs have no shelter, no food and no water.
Great construction!

Just to show, up here is nothing... nothing to protect. There is no reason to tie all these dogs here.

A sign of faith...
... next to it a 'barrel-dog'
... we can only feed him...
Great!

Looks like an brand new metal factory, with the EU Flag on top of the building.

SHAME ON THEM!!!!

Modern... but at the entrance a starving dog chained to a rusty barrel.
Tied female dogs have a even harder life because they get pregnant and have to give birth under this horrible circumstances.
Babie dog tied much to short on a cord. Next to him his little manky doghouse.
Little cutie disappears in his house with the pig ear.
We drive to the place where Claudia and me have freed the little dog we named Vandes in 2005.

We desperately hope, that there will be no new dog at his place.
Fortunately... no new dog chained...
Across from Vandes was a Rottweiler girl chained. She probably died, but unfortunately there is already a follower at her place...
The hitten animals just get driven over and over again....
Good bye Vantes!!!!
A last snack at Manoli's. Later i will pick up Flokati from Frieda and at the evening taking the ferry to Athens.

Fortunately Ilias from Stray .gr will pick me up in the early morning and drive me to the airport. And he will give me a dog over, which will travel with me to Switzerland as well.

25. Februar 2007

Good morning - Maus!
Silke has at the moment many puppies to bottle feed.
Fortunately the tomcat with the horrible infection gets better.

Approximately in one week the lost eye can be removed and he gets castrated and released.

We drive up to Chorafakia where the dog house is.

Hazel, a beautiful, friendly  Dobermann.
Here the proof!

Unbelivable but true. In the bathroom of the dogs house is a flamingo living.

He was found in Chania because he didnt make it to his summer residence.

As soon as he recovers he has the chance to go to Paros where a wild bird reservation accepted to take him.
Short visit at the cat's house.

Puschkin the guard dog welcomes us friendly.
Tino is living with Puschkin in the garden.

He is looking for a home as well but the problem with this dog is, that he is unbelivable shy.
We drive to Joy's and Dave's house. They run a very good foster home and help diligently many animals.

This sweet little 3-legged girl recovers at  Joy's and Dave's house from the amputation. She was hit by a car.
On my last night we go out for dinner and have a good laugh because silke forgot her glasses and is not able to read the menu card.

24. Februar 2007

Still bad weather. Im worrying about the ferry that i have to take tomorrow otherwise i will miss my flight home from athens.

The ferry only leaves when the weather is good enough.
A big problem with Lafayette. He lives since years in Chanias streets and was always in good condition.

But now he is suffering of an abscesses at his anal orifice.

Silke told us, the only medicament that probably will help him is Neoral and costs around 80 Euros.
Silke has oddles on veterinarian bills to pay and will not come up for the medicin Lafayette needs desperately.

Lets see what we can do for him...

23. Februar 2007

Not really nice weather today.

Im not in a good mood... especially not because i became the flees Flokati had before spraying him with anitparasit spray.
Today we drive to a horse range in the mountains. Up here a shooting had happend between leaseholder and owner. I dont really understand the whole story.

Fact is, both of them have disappeared and someone has to take care of the animals.
Fortunately an former employee was found an we meet him at the rance.
The employe is promising that he will take care of all the horses and he seems to be very trustable.
Horrible how the bunnies are kept in these cages.
This donkey seem to bee in quite good condition.
Time for diversion.

We are visiting Eleni, she and Claudia managed the Doghouse in Chorafakia together for long time.

Elenis fulltime job now is beeing a mama :)
This black pit lives in the village and managed it once again to get free from the chain.

He is very friendly and know Claudia because he always gets a pig's ear from her.
Happy running away with his pig's ear.
On the way to the restaurant, always time to hug some strays.

Flokati 23. Februar 2007

Claudia Schneider an me on our day off on the way to Heraklion. We dont even get out of Chania because we see a small dog strangely crossing the street and then overbalancing.

Thats it - no Heraklion. Picking up the cute dog and driving to the vet to find out what his problem is.
At Panajotis the vet we x-ray Flokati.
While waiting for the x-ray we have a laugh with Mary.

I would like to mention her, because she is doing a great job and even takes all the paperwork back home to make it possible that all the animals can travel by time.
We see on the x-ray two injuries but it has to be checked once more.
Panajotis explains to us Flokatis ulna luxation outwards of his right hind leg.

I will take the x-ray with me, because...
actually it wasnt part of my plan to take an animal back home from crete because of my ferry journey and all that without car.

... but.... Flokati get microchipped on my name and i will take him with me because there is really no space for him at the moment in crete.
We nearly go crazy... no space... nowhere for Flokati.

Our last chance is Frieda...
Finally arrived at Frieda's wunderfull place!

Cute Kunelli (Bunny) says hello....
Great eyes, something for my collection (www.webmaus.ch/eyes)
Frieda is willing to take Flokati for a couple of days. Without her help we would haven been really desperate.

Thank you Frieda!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Flokati doesnt really understand whats going on. But we are so thankfull to know that he is safe and in good hands until i leave.
A pig's ear for goodbye.
Whimpering Flokati is looking at us when we leave.
I must have a look at all the puppies.

On our journey Salino managed it once again to get out of his box.

He is staying in the car because every place is crowdes. Its even better then to be out in the streets.
Salino is a beautiful, charming and smart young dog.
The 17th of february 2007 he was found on a street, hit by a car. He got operated the same day. Due to this accident he had an comminuted fracture of his right hind leg.

22. Februar 2007

First night i spend at Lindas home. It was very nice to see all of her animals again.
Abbie Abbie, female, not sterilised, approx. 2002 is one of the disabled animals Linda takes care of.

Abbie was hit by a car and would need a walking frame with wheels to 'walk' around.
Sheba
This cute cat is paralyzed as well but she handels her disability very well.
Yaya Yaya - the grandmother
My bed is already occupied. But i dont mind dogs sleeping next to me.

Linda and me are spending the morning by feeding and cleaning the kennels.

All these animals are looking for good homes. If you are interested in one of them, please contact me.
Mobile: 0041(0)76 391 33 25

Alf, approx. 9year old, castrated Boxer. Unfortunately no chance to rehome him in Switzerland because cutten ears and tail is forbidden since many years.

Many cute puppies at Silkes place as well.
Claudia Schneider found this cat in the streets of Chania.

We drive straight to the vet. He has a big infection of the eyes and nose. The left eye is lost for sure. We will treat him with antibiotics for at least 10 days.

21. Februar 2007

Xania! After 9 hours on the ferry i finally arrive in the harbour of Souda.

Because of the fever and the stress i didnt wake up when we arrived. 2 hours later a friendly employee of  Anek Lines was kicking me out of bed...
First i run to 'my' dogs in the harbour... but im shocked. Not one dog around... Linda told me that one day, the ensemble pack disappeard. I couldnt belive it, but its true.

I dont want to think about what happend to our harbour dogs..
Souda Strays Finally 3 dogs appear.

First i run to a supermarket to buy some food for the dogs.
Souda Strays
Souda stray broken leg Finally i see rasta, the only dog i know from the last time.

Unfortunately his nose and left leg seem to bee injured.

I will tell Linda later - lets see if we can help him.
This poor girl is tide behind a high fence. I can only feed her throug the wire netting.
Avalon Fortunately Avalon is open.

Its the only place i really feel welcome and comfortable when im in Chania.

And even my dogs have been welcome every time i was out for a drink.
Snapshot while writting the diary.

Yorgos Pharmacy 20. Februar 2007 - Fever

I dont feel well, i got a fever and the pharmacies are obviously all closed...

Marina and I had a nice talk about the work of Stray.gr and a great greek dinner.

I decided to take at least one dog from Stray.gr back home to Switzerland.
Marina with Maya Marina with one of her dogs, beautiful Maya. She was abadoned and Stray.gr picked her up and saved her life.
Marina with Stray Greek strays - they are the best!!
Stray Marina and Kostas Marina (Foundress of Stray.gr) and Costa can use the boxes and antiparasit sprays for sure that i brought with me.

In this place i would like to thank the Susy Utzinger Foundation and Animal Shelter Pfötli which make it once more possible to bring donations to greece.

 Akropolis

18. Februar 2007 - Athens

I like Athens, not a lot of strays around. And the ones i've seen are in quite good condition.

I wonder where all the strays are. But tommorrow i get the chance to talk to the people of Stray.gr

17. Februar 2007 - Claudia goes Greece - Athens
Greece Car Not a lot to say yet.

I arrived in athens and overcame my fear of flying.
